New Alpro Hazelnut Chocolate Dairy Free Ice Cream
There's some new Dairy Free Vegan ice creams on the block...and this time, they're Soya Free too! Which is unusual considering they're made by Alpro, Kings of the Soya Milk market. I'm glad they're soya free because I'm a little sensitive to the stuff myself...and no doubt so are many others who are vegan, dairy free etc, so it's nice to have an alternative.
Unlike most new Dairy Free products this one isn't made with coconut milk or legume protein, instead it's made with water and "soluble gluco fibre"...whatever the heck that is! If anyone knows, please feel free to enlighten me in the comments! Here, you can see the ingredients list for yourselves:
Hearing the words Chocolate Hazelnut had me thinking this would be like Nutella in ice cream form...foolish, I know, but one can dream! Sadly it's nothing alike...
It didn't taste very nice at all to be honest. It reminded me somewhat of Christmas Calender chocolate, with stale nuts in. It just tastes...weird, in a way that I can't quite explain. I can only presume the taste is coming from the soluble gluco fibre. I couldn't really taste any chocolate, it was barely there. All in all this ice cream was a bit of a disappointment.
On the plus side, it contains 30% less sugars and saturated fats and is 100% plant-based, as well as being free from preservatives, gluten, soya etc. It's also approved by the Vegan Society.
Overall, it's nice to see a company attempting Dairy Free ice cream that is lower in sugar, fat, is soya free etc, as this seems to be where health trends are heading...but personally, I prefer my treats to be a bit more substantial. I think coconut milk would have been a better option as the bulk of the ice cream, and luckily, Alpro also have a Coconut variety in the range...stay tuned for a review of that one!
6.5 out of 10.
Have you tried this ice cream? What did you think of it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments...

DeleteTo be honest, I loved it. I haven't had ice cream in 2 years, let alone chocolate ice-cream. So for people like me, who are recovering from an eating disorder, it's a way for us to be able to enjoy something tasty without feeling guilty!
