Violife Original Vegan Cheese & Tesco Free From Dough Mix! #Veganuary

Image
Today's review is a slight switch-up from the usual snacks - I'm reviewing cheese...vegan cheese to be precise! Yes, in honor of my vegan friends and #veganuary I thought I would see what a gluten free pizza tastes like with this Violife Original on it. This isn't any regular vegan cheese with soya added, it's made with a mixture of coconut oil and starch, making it suitable for legume allergy sufferers too. I found this in the chilled Free From section of Tesco costing £2.30 or so for a 200g block. I also purchased some Tesco Free From Gluten & Dairy Dough Mix, to make my own vegan and gluten free pizza. I tried some of the cheese by itself before melting it. It tastes okay; it's similar to the rubbery Dairylea style cheese slices used in burgers or sandwiches. I hoped it would be much improved when melted on a pizza...I added tomato puree, as well as herbs and sweetcorn. A simple, classic but tasty combination! It turned out quite well... ...

Dr Oetker Gluten Free Ristorante Pizza Mozzarella

Image
There's some new gluten free pizzas on the block by Dr Oetker, a brand I used to be a big fan of when I still ate gluten. They're doing two varieties; Pizza Mozzarella and Salame which are available now from Tesco for £3.49. I found mine in the regular pizza section rather than the Free From, which is a weird place to situate them if you ask me. The pizzas take 13-15 mins to cook in a preheated oven, are suitable for vegetarians and nut free. I baked as instructed, although may have gone slightly over the recommended time. The pizza turned out just the right level of crispy but with a sloppy feel like a traditional thin pizza. There was plenty of basil dotted across the pizza as well as a handful of cherry tomatoes. And I have to say, this was a very tasty gluten free pizza! I wouldn't have been able to tell that it was gluten free as it had the perfect texture; not too dry or crunchy and not too sloppy but somewhere in between. The topping was rich a...

Pizza Express Gluten Free Margherita Pizza (Sainsbury's)

Image
I've been on the hunt for this new gluten free pizza from Pizza Express ever since I heard about it...it's very difficult to find a good gluten free pizza, there's very few on the market and no other brand makes fresh ones like this. The prospect of a decent pizza had me very excited! Luckily my local large Sainsbury's store now sells these, in the fresh foods section along with the other Pizza Express pizzas. It cost £4, obviously quite a lot for a regular sized pizza, but I don't mind paying extra in this case. The pizza is vegetarian, certified gluten free by coeliac UK and comprises of Pizza Express' signature free from base, with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and herbs. A simple, but classic combination. Removing it from the box, it looked like any other basic thin and crispy style pizza. I sprinkled some extra herbs and olive oil on top before cooking...it takes around 10 minutes but I got distracted and left it in the oven a bit too long and...

Goodfella's Gluten Free Pepperoni, Mushroom & Ham Pizza

Image
So today's review is for something I don't think I've ever featured on the blog before...pizza! The Gluten Free sort, obviously! Pizza is something I've missed very sorely since going gluten free, there's not many good brands of it around and although Pizza Hut and Pizza Express do some respectable options, sometimes you just want one you can pop in the oven at home! So when I found this new Gluten Free pizza from Goodfella's I was very pleased indeed. I bought this on offer from Tesco in the Free From section, I believe it was around £2 at the time. It contains pepperoni, mushroom and ham on a gluten free pizza base with tomato and cheese. Above is what it looked like frozen before cooking... And here's the end result: not too shabby for a frozen pizza! It tasted pretty good, there was a nice amount of mushroom, pepperoni and ham although I did feel it could have done with a touch more mozzarella. In hindsight I wish I'd bought some extra...
