The Licktators John Lemon Lemon Curd Ice Cream

Heron Frozen Foods have recently been selling some new ice creams from The Licktators for the bargainous price of only £1.50 a tub, so naturally, I simply couldn't refuse to try them! The flavours included are Lemon Curd, Popcorn and Chocolate Praline.

Like all The Licktators ice creams, it comes with a pun in the name...this one is John Lemon, presumably to tie in with the "British" theme The Licktators love so much?

Whilst I "imagine" some John Lenon fans (and possibly Yoko Ono) might be incensed by this change of name, I think it adds an amusing touch. But what's most important of course is the taste...and I think John would've approved of such a delicious ice cream!

This is simply one of the nicest ice creams I've had in ages, but then maybe I'm just easily pleased! It's a simple vanilla ice cream with lots of tangy lemon curd sauce rippled through, and there's a generous amount of it too. It's very strong and refreshing and if you love lemon curd tarts as I do, you'll adore this; it works beautifully!

My only gripe is they use a thickener called carrageenan in the ingredients - this is a type of seaweed which can cause stomach upset in sensitive types (like myself!) - just google it if you want to know the gory details - but needless to say, it's not a good additive. I did suffer some tummy upset after eating this, and I don't usually have troubles with ice creams like Haagen Dazs since they don't use such thickeners, so I could definitely tell the difference.

Sensitivity aside, the carrageenan likely won't be a problem for most people, and this is such a tasty ice cream I can overlook it on this occasion, but be aware of it if you do have food sensitivities. This still gets a big thumbs up from me - be sure to look out for The Licktators ice cream in Heron Foods, or The Co Op (unfortunately The Co Op charge extortionate prices - boo!)

RATING: 7.5 out of 10.

  1. Sounds amaaaazing! :D Sorry to hear of your tummy woes - Its a shame that companies feel the need to still have all these additives in their products.. Im sure they could find alternatives if they really tried! xx
