Galaxy Darker Milk Review

galaxy darker milk

Since the Cadbury Darkmilk surprised me with how nice it was, I thought I'd review one of its new competitiors in the form of this Galaxy Darker Milk. The name itself amuses me - it's almost a sly implication that it's darker and thus better than Darkmilk. But is it?

galaxy darkmilk

Firstly, it contains very different ingredients to Cadbury Darkmilk. The cocoa solids are 33% (much less than Darkmilk's 40%) and the ingredients contain lactose and whey protein, as well as palm fat. The Cadbury Darkmilk is already ahead of the game in that respect since it doesn't contain palm fat.

Firstly I have to say I like the block design of this bar - it's sleek and curved and a lot nicer than the Darkmilk. The 110g bars are available from Tesco and Asda now for around £1.50, and there's also a Hazelnut variety.

Unfortunately it has a very odd taste. When I first bit into it I was taken aback a little...it tasted smoky?! I thought I must have gotten a bad bar. This odd smoky flavour was then followed by the taste of calendar chocolate...you know the stale, chalky stuff. I persisted in eating more in the hopes of tasting something resembling Galaxy at all. Eventually I could detect the creamy Galaxy taste and texture, it's hard to describe but I'm sure you all know what I mean. The bar is described as a "blend of smooth Galaxy milk and dark chocolate" so I guess this is why the milk chocolate was hidden behind the dark. The result is just an odd, smoky tasting concoction that has a Galaxy flavour that isn't improved upon. I'm wondering if the cocoa beans Mars use are just poor quality?

After posting a quick review on Instagram a few people in the comments also mentioned the smoky taste, confirming I'm not alone (I thought I was going mad haha!)

Overall then, what can I say but this is just an odd bar that doesn't seem to have been thought through. I can't imagine it will stick around when Cadbury Darkmilk already does the same thing better, and even that bar is hard to find in shops.

Have you tried Galaxy Darker Milk? If so what did you think of it?

Random bit of nostalgia...who remembers Galaxy Promises bars (shown above), which were blocks of milk and dark chocolate mixed together in the same bar? Leave a comment if so!

  1. This should have been so nice but wasn't - as for the cocoa solids I think its more than 33%, it says milk chocolate contains 33% but never specifies the cocoa solids of the dark chocolate component, which I reckon is probably about 40%-50%. Could be wrong. That smoky taste is weird, they must be using a strange type of cocoa, or maybe just tipping ashtrays into the mixture? One of the two must be right. Its weird because I actually prefer Galaxy over Dairy Milk, especially after Mondelez have had their hands/paws/claws on it, but the Cadbury Dark Milk is so much nicer than this. Go figure.

  2. The strange thing is, Mars do a great "semi sweet" chocolate (their term for it in US) which coats amongst other things, a Milky Way (Mars Bar) Dark and it is lovely.

  3. As we speak, I am eating the Galaxy version and it is a huge disappointment. It does have a weird chemical taste, and "smokey" is a good description. It tastes like out of date cooking chocolate, and I will be keeping to the Cadbury Dark Milk as I really liked it so much better.

  4. Haven't tried the Cadburys dark milk so far but was also disappointed with Galaxy darker, I'm not getting the smokiness but I don't get any Galaxy flavour either. Will definitely be trying the Cadbury.

  6. Yuk is all i can say - i don't usually prefer cadburys chocolate as i find it bland, and leaves my mouth all claggy but their dark milk is far superior to the Galaxy Darkmilk. The only use i found for it ( preferable to the bin as i don't like waste ) is to place one row in a cup of milk and blast in the microwave for two minutes and stir - makes a nice enough hot chocolate and funnily enough the smoky flavour disappears !!!

  9. That's just how proper cocoa chocolate is, I tried 100% cocoa are a tour of Rowntree's chocolate factory in York, only nibbled a tin bit and it is awful, bitter, no sugar, no milk, a horrible texture

  10. Just tasted my first bar the word that comes to mind is "rank". It is awful the bitter and smokey taste are overpowering. Cannot see this stuff being popular and can only hope it is taken out of the market very soon.

  13. I must be odd cos i LOVE it, i'm addicted ,i eat the whole 110g bar in a sitting..and as someone who rarely eats dairy this is probably why my tastebuds have changed. I find a lot of chocolate far too sweet now. This taste like galaxy choc to me when i used to eat tons of the stuff when i ate diary...No wonder if was 49p in B and M, but don't get a smoky taste tho..More for me then!!

    1. Well i must be a misfit too as i loved it. I found it still had a creamy taste and i didn't find a smokiness either. It seems they have discontinued it, i only hope its to re-invent the bar and make it better and maybe add orange flavouring and cut out the palm fat? Who knows but i liked it and miss it as i don"t like the cadburys darkmilk anywhere near as much, i find it flat and dull with little taste.
