Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar Review

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar

Ruby Chocolate is becoming quite trendy now in the confectionery world it seems. It's been described as a "fourth" type of chocolate, after traditional milk, dark and white chocolate, and is pretty much a type of fruity chocolate thanks to the cocoa beans used. Nestle recently launched their own Kitkat Ruby bars in the UK to capitalize on the trend, but other companies are also making versions of the pink stuff. Enter Prestat, a London company famous for making quality handmade chocolates.

Prestat kindly sent me some of their range to review recently, spanning the history of their company from the launch of their first The Red Box in the 1950's, to the present day when Ruby Chocolate was created. I'm starting with the bar version, but Prestat also sent me some Ruby Chocolate Discs as well as The Red Box, which I'll review separately.

Prestat Ruby Chocolate Bar

Ruby chocolate is made from Ruby cocoa beans, which are especially selected for their exceptional colour and forest fruit flavours. The ingredients consist of cocoa butter, milk powder, sugar and cocoa mass, so this isn't technically the same as white chocolate which contains no cocoa solids. The main difference here is that cocoa solids are lower down in the ingredients compared to milk or dark chocolate.

I do like the bar design, it looks very special with the Prestat logo printed on each block. The blocks are quite chunky, which is just what I like from my chocolate bars!

It tastes very lovely indeed, like a good quality white chocolate with a distinctive fruity edge. Not so much tart like you get from raspberries but more like how fine quality cocoa tastes fruity. It's very nice, and rather subtle and refreshing without being too sweet or overpowering (as I imagine the Kitkat Ruby might be!) It's creamy enough without being milk dominated like white chocolate. The main thing I noticed though was how good the quality is - compared to most chocolate companies it's pretty high up there. Prestat have definitely earned their name as a quality chocolatier; a lot of effort has obviously gone into the production of their products.

Overall, as an introduction to Ruby Chocolate this bar was very lovely and it's something I would buy for sure. It'd make a great gift for anyone who likes white chocolate...or pink-coloured things!

  1. I tried the Kit Kat Ruby, wasn't that impressed to be honest. Not unpleasant by any means, but a little bland considering the hype.
