Costa's Hot Spiced Apple Drink Review

This is my first review of a product from a national coffee chain, and it's quite appropriate that its Costa as it just so happens to be my favourite! (although I will admit to occasionally flirting with Caffe Nero!)

Whilst stopping by there on a freezing cold day recently I fancied something a bit different from hot chocolate and plumped for this Hot Spiced Apple Drink instead. It's part of Costa's Autumn drinks range which also includes their Chocolate Orange Mocha Latte (see review HERE by Foodstuff Finds). It's advertised as "bewitchingly warm, fearfully fruity" to tie-in with Halloween, but I do hope it will stick around into the Winter months!

I was very impressed with the presentation - the drink comes in a glass complete with a cinnamon stick and some star anise floating in it. I was told by the lady serving me it would taste very strong, and boy was she right. Taking my first sip I was met with an intensely sweet and tart apple flavour which put a huge smile on my face! It tasted delicious; very warming and fruity, and gave me just the energy boost I needed on a freezing cold day. The spice flavours gave it a warming kick and the star anise pods and cinnamon were a nice touch that really added to the autumnal feel. I chewed on the cinnamon stick after finishing my drink...which probably isn't advised, but hey it was fun!

Overall I can't recommend this drink enough; it's perfect for an energy boost on a cold day and I'll definitely be buying it in future! I just hope it won't be discontinued now that Halloween is over...

*Edit: Costa have informed me this will be on the menu until January - yay!

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

  1. Thank you so much for this review! I'm not usually a Costa goer, but I unexpectedly ended up stood right outside one yesterday and where I'd normally have walked off, I dove straight in and asked if they had this drink available. It was utterly gorgeous! I really appreciated the addition of whole spices, which seemed more concentrated the closer I got to the bottom of the cup - where the cinnamon scent really hit me. Think I'll have to make extra efforts to visit Costa til January! :)

    1. Glad you liked it Lindsey! :) The spices are great arent they...I just loved the cinnamon stick they put in. Costa have just unveiled a return of their black forest winter hot chocolate, have you tried that one before?

    2. I've actually only been to a Costa a couple of times before - Starbucks is the closest coffee place to me, so I'm usually stuck with their very limited selection. The Black Forest Hot Chocolate does sound good - I saw an advert for it in their store yesterday. I'll have to add it to my 'must consume before January' list. In the meantime, I'll look out for your review! ;)

  3. In the US Starbucks do an amazing drink called caramel apple spice. It has cream on top and caramel sauce, praying this is along the same lines as I was obsessed with it over there!

  5. Heya, just wondering if you knew how they make this? Is it with actual apple juice/is it all a powder?

    1. Hi Phoebe, sorry I don't know, I would presume they use a powder or syrup mixed with hot water.

  9. I had ond of these today though not as full as yours and minus star anise. It was delicious though I felt slightly cheated it wasn't fuller.
