Mint Daim Bar (Limited Edition) Review

Image
Today's review is thanks to one of my kind readers, Vicky, who recently visited Sweden and picked up a new Limited Edition Mint Daim bar for me. We don't usually get limited edition Daim varieties in the UK (although there were briefly some Cola and Orange flavours!), but a little research reveals there's been lots of Daim limited editions in its native Sweden - Dark and White Chocolate , Forest Fruits "Summer Dream" , Lemon-Lime "Cool Breeze" , Cappuccino ,...and even Daim Ice Cream Bars ! Maybe there's no demand for all these things in the UK. What do you think, readers...would you like to see more Daim varieties on shelves? Back to this mint flavour...inevitably, the bar has shattered in the post, which isn't surprising as it's longer than the Daim bars we get in the UK. It smelled intensely of mint, in fact it reminded me of Murray Mints and Mintoes - those butter mints that are often popular with grannies. And that's kind of...

Milka Vanilla Cream Bar Review

Image
Whilst in a local import food store recently I spotted this new Vanilla Cream Milka variety. I'm not sure if it's just for the Polish market but I haven't seen it anywhere else. Being a fan of both vanilla and Milka chocolates in general I just had to give it a try! The chocolate contained a layer of vanilla cream topped with a layer of gooey yellow vanilla "sauce". It looked very intriguing; I don't think I've ever had a chocolate bar with a gooey vanilla layer before! There were speckles of vanilla seeds dispersed throughout the cream. It tasted very nice indeed...the creme filling was very smooth and creamy, whilst the gooey sauce was very sweet and further added to the vanilla flavour. It was a bit on the excessively sweet side, but still very nice, especially if you like vanilla flavored chocolates! Overall, this isn't something to rush out and track down, but it's still a very tasty bar of Milka which I'd recommend trying i...

Chips Ahoy! Cookies Popcorn Candy Chip (new to UK!) Review

Image
When Mondelez launched the Dairy Milk Chips Ahoy! Cookies bar last month, many found this an odd decision since Chips Ahoy! cookies are not well-known in the UK. True to style though, Mondelez were planning to launch the brand here all along and expect it to be as popular as Oreo within the next 5 years. A tall order! I have to say I didn't expect these cookies to be in shops so quickly - Asda are already selling them for £1 a pack on special offer. There's 2 varieties: "Popcorn Candy Chip" which I'll be reviewing today and also a "Crispy Choco Caramel" variety, which I'm saving for later! Popcorn Candy Chip is described as "Cookies with chocolate chips, sugar-coated candy shells and caramelised lightly salted popcorn". Opening the wrapper revealed a plastic tray of 12 small cookies with an enticing biscuity aroma. There was a hint of popcorn in there too which is rather unusual for cookies! I was surprised by how small the...

Cadbury Roses Favourites Bags: Golden Barrel & Strawberry Dream (Limited Edition)

Image
Cadbury have been releasing a lot of new products recently, and the latest to join their ever-expanding range are these bagged versions of Cadbury Roses. I'm sure we've all wished we could get our favourites from Roses all by themselves at some point, so this is partly a genius idea. On the other hand, it requires little effort and innovation on Cadbury's part, so it's also a bit lazy. Luckily these are only limited editions so they won't be bothering us for too long... The varieties are Strawberry Dreams and Golden Barrels; I don't know if they're doing any other flavours but these are the only ones I saw in my local Co-Op. They're currently on offer for £1 alongside Marvellous Mix-Ups and Terry's Chocolate Orange Minis . I'm glad I didn't pay more than £1 because when I opened the bag there weren't many chocolates in at all...literally just a handful! The Strawberry Dreams clocked in at 93g in weight and the Golden Barrels at...

Cadbury Eclairs Velvets Coffee Flavour Review

Image
Another day, another new Cadbury product...I'm starting to sense a pattern here. I can't grumble though because it's always exciting to unexpectedly find new chocolate varieties on shelves! This one should please fans of coffee chocolates, of which there is an unfortunate lack of in the UK. Most brands have done coffee variations at some point, of course; such as Kitkat , Aero , Wispaccino , Twix , Maltesers , Galaxy  etc, but they never seem to stick around. I guess the flavour just isn't popular enough. Luckily Cadbury's have come to the rescue! Cadbury Eclairs Velvets Coffee Flavour are exclusive to Tesco, and they're described as "Coffee flavour soft caramel with a choclatey centre, enrobed in delicious Cadbury milk chocolate". They're currently on offer for £1. The Eclairs are all individually wrapped, although I could still detect a whiff of chocolate and coffee permeating through the bag. I cut one in half, which proved a li...

Cadbury Dairy Milk with Chips Ahoy! Cookies Review

Image
The new products from Cadbury this year keep on rolling in...with the latest addition to the Dairy Milk range being this new variety with Chips Ahoy! Cookies. It's an odd addition since most UK folks have never heard of Chips Ahoy! cookies before - they aren't even sold over here! Maybe Mondelez are planning to launch them soon though. The bar contains a biscuit flavoured cream filling, with pieces of chocolate chip cookies embedded within - it's somewhat similar to the Dairy Milk with Oreo bar in fact. The chocolate smelled very biscuity, and according to the wrapper the filling is "biscuit flavoured" so I don't know if they've mixed biscuit paste with it as well as the cookie pieces. It tasted good, in fact very good and I would say it even surpasses the delicious Dairy Milk with Oreo! The filling was very dense and creamy with a rich biscuity flavour, with the cookie pieces bringing a nice crunchiness and the chocolate chips adding fur...

Daim Ice Cream Tub (UK) Review

Image
I've been eyeing up this D'aim Ice Cream for quite a while now, and finally decided to give it a whirl when I spotted it for £3 in Morrisons. It's described as "D'aim flavour ice cream with D'aim pieces" which basically means caramel flavour ice cream with bits of D'aim mixed in. Opening the lid it didn't have a particularly strong caramel aroma, but it looked pleasant enough with plenty of D'aim pieces. It tasted pretty good, the ice cream was creamy and sweet and with a nice burnt sugar caramel flavour. It wasn't quite as great as the likes of Ben and Jerry's or Haagen Dazs caramel ice creams but it was good enough. The D'aim pieces added a much welcome crunch and went with it really well. I wasn't particularly blown away by it, though; but that's because I'm used to buying Haagen Dazs when it's on offer, so this inevitably seemed sub-par in comparison. As it is it's a nice enough ice cream, just no...

Milka Alpine Milk Yoghurt Review (Polish version)

Image
I had resigned myself to never being able to enjoy Polish Milka bars; they're usually too sweet or artificial tasting. But again I decided to give one of their bars a go whilst browsing my local import store. I've never really tried many chocolates containing yogurt except the Ritter Sport Olympia , so thought I would take a chance on this one. I'm glad I did, because it turned out to be one of the nicer Polish Milka bars I've tried in a while. In a nutshell, the yoghurt filling is nicely creamy with a pleasant yoghurty tang, but not overpoweringly so. It blends well with the sweet alpine milk chocolate and makes this a simple yet creamy tasting chocolate bar. Overall, nothing groundbreaking, but it's a simple combination that works and if you like the tanginess of yoghurt with chocolate then I'd recommend giving this a try! They're available in most Polish stores. RATING: 7.5 out of 10.

Cadbury Roses Pots of Joy Strawberry Dream Review

Image
Whilst in Morrisons over the weekend I spotted these new Cadbury Roses Pots of Joy. I couldn't quite believe it - this is the first time Cadbury have used the Strawberry Dream from Roses in a different product! They're described as "A layer of smooth & creamy dessert with melted Cadbury milk chocolate and a layer of Strawberry flavour fondant". The pack contained 2 pots with foil lids. Peeling the lid off one revealed an upper chocolate layer with a larger amount of strawberry fondant below: The chocolate layer tasted similar to Dairy Milk Pots of Joy - very creamy and smooth, but perhaps a tad sweeter. The fondant layer had a strong strawberry flavour which replicated the filling from Roses Strawberry Dream very well - meaning it's very sweet! It also reminded me of the Dairy Milk Strawberries & Creme bars from last Summer - slightly yogurty. The combination was very nice and made for a lovely sweet treat, although it was a bit of a sugar...

Milka Tender a la Tiramisu Mini Rolls Review

Image
A while ago I found a load of different Milka products in a local Discount store. These have been doing the rounds for a while now and include a Milka Black Forest Roll, a Strawberry Yoghurt Cake, the Schokolade Cake reviewed here by Grocery Gems , Strawberry Mini Rolls and also these Milka Tender a la Tiramisu mini rolls. I paid £1 for this pack, which contains 5 mini rolls. When I opened one up it had a sweet chocolatey aroma with a slight hint of coffee. Taste-wise it was very light and spongy, with a light alcoholic coffee flavoured buttercream filling. It was nice but not very strong in flavour. Coupled with the very thin layer of chocolate coating I was a bit disappointed to be honest - it felt a bit insubstantial and not quite as special as I was hoping. Overall, these mini rolls were very pleasant but they're not really as special or fancy as they initially appear. The tiramisu flavour is a little weak and the sponge itself is too light. They're wort...

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Mix-Ups with Maynards (Vegetarian) Jellies Review

Image
Hot on the heels of Marvellous Mix-Ups with Oreo , today I'm reviewing Marvellous Mix-Ups with Maynards. Unlike the Oreo version this is more unusual in that it contains jelly sweets...with chocolate! Marvellous Creations are known for their jelly and chocolate combinations, of course; ( Jelly Popping Candy and Cola Pretzel Honeycomb ) so this comes as no surprise. In a way I suppose you're getting the best of both worlds with a product like this - it saves the bother of deciding between sweets or chocolate when you need a snacks fix! (we've all had that dilemma, right?) The bag contains Dairy Milk Caramel Nibbles, Fudge Dreams and Maynards jellies. I'm not sure which jellies specifically as they aren't Wine Gums or Jelly Babies...just different fruit-flavoured jellies in fruit shapes. The Fudge Dreams are the same as those found in Cadbury's Milk Tray, although this isn't highlighted on the pack. Opening the bag I was a little sad at the small amount...

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Mix-Ups with Oreo Review

Image
As well as the new Marvellous Creations Banana Caramel Crisp bar, Cadbury's have also launched these new "Marvellous Mix-Ups" and the idea is that they're a "mix up" of different chocolates and sweets made by Cadbury. As someone who remembers penny "mix-ups" as a kid I was quite excited to see how the combinations would work, and if they could rival Revels for flavour-combining! Today's review is for the Oreo variety (there's also a Maynards jellies variety - review due soon!) When I first read the description for these I was a little skeptical as it seems like a sneaky way to re-package existing products. The "mix-up" features Giant Dairy Milk Buttons,  Dairy Milk Pebbles , Mini Oreos and White Chocolate Buttons. All delicious products in their own right...but what matters is whether or not they all work together, and luckily they do! Opening the bag there was a nice amount of each product, with plenty of white chocolate b...

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations Banana Caramel Crisp Review

Image
The new Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations bar is finally out in time for Easter, and what a marvellous creation it is indeed! This bar seems to be replacing the Cola Pretzel Honeycomb  variety introduced last year, which can now be found in Poundland and other discount stores. The 200g bar is on introductory offer at Asda for £1.50 at the moment but the RRP will be £2.50. It's described as "Milk chocolate with banana flavoured candy pieces (8%), caramel pieces (5%) and malted cereal balls (3%)", and like the other Marvellous Creations flavours comes in a "crazy paving" style slab. This made it a little awkward to break into pieces, but I managed to find some chunks with bits of banana candy sticking out: The aroma of the bar had me salivating - it reminded me of the (now discontinued)  Dairy Milk with Shortcake Biscuit I used to love, as the cereal pieces had a similar biscuity aroma. I was fully expecting the chocolate to taste weird due to the banana ...

Peanut Butter Oreo Wafer (Chinese) Review

Image
Many thanks to Bring Back Banjo Bar for sending me this Oreo Peanut Butter wafer recently - she's quite the wafer expert thanks to her campaign to bring back the long lost Banjo bar, and has sent me some great wafer bars recently. Please do sign the petition to bring back Banjo HERE ! At first I wasn't sure what this bar was as the writing is all in Chinese but the blue design just screamed "Oreo!" at me. I gathered that the logo in the corner was Kraft and the images of peanuts suggested it contained peanut butter. A quick google revealed that Grocery Gems reviewed this bar back in January - I must have missed it! Opening the wrapper revealed a crumbly chocolate wafer with a beige-coloured peanut butter cream filling. The wafer had a nice rich cocoa flavour whilst the peanut butter cream provided a hit of nutty, salty creaminess. The cream was a little sparse and got lost in the dryness of the wafer, but despite this the bar still made for a decent ...
