Nestle Oh Henry! Candy Bar Review

My local Tesco Express recently reduced some of their American snacks to clear, one of them being this Nestle Oh Henry! bar...it's one I've never tried before so I thought I should (in the name of snacks science, of course). I'm always wary of some American chocolate bars, especially the Nestle ones as they're often lacklustre. I don't know why...maybe it's the fake chocolate, or reliance on corn syrup, but they're never as exciting as they sound on paper.


This one was described as peanutty caramel fudge bars in milk chocolate. Sounds yum, right!


Opening the pack, there were two pieces, with a faintly chocolatey and peanutty aroma.


I took a bite, and was met with super sweet caramel fudge, not the buttery sort but the "corn syrup" caramel found in a lot of American snacks. It's not really true fudge but more of a very sweet nougat. The peanuts rounded things off and added a nice savory flavour to the whole thing. It reminded me of a Cadburys Star Bar...not quite as good, but it definitely had a similar thing going on.

Overall, this isn't a bad bar of chocolate but it's not something I'd seek out again. It's very sweet and I guess it's just different to what we're used to here.

    In a complete reversal of the Kit-Kat and Rolo situation, the Canadian Oh Henry! is made by Hershey and the US version is Nestle. Hershey do a much better job in Canada distributing the bar as it's everywhere over there whereas it's availability in the US is rather spotty, certainly where I am in California anyway.

      Thanks for the info..that is an odd situation indeed, I can imagine a Hershey version being nicer since they're pretty good in general.

Cadbury Dream Ice Creams - back for Summer! (UK)

If you've sorely missed Cadbury Dream White Chocolate since it was withdrawn from UK shelves many years ago, fear not, it's going to be back for Summer, albeit in a colder form - yes, ice cream! Dream Ice Creams have been in shops sporadically for several years now (including a Strawberry variety that was exclusive to Farmfoods) but finally they're getting an official release just for the Summer, yay! It will be sold in major supermarkets in packs of three, and impulse sticks will cost £1.80 from convenience stores. Maybe Cadbury are testing the waters to see how popular they are...who knows, maybe the proper Cadbury Dream bar may be resurrected if sales are good! You can already find Cadbury Dream ice creams in Fultons Foods , a Northern based frozen food store if you're lucky enough to live near one (there's a store finder in the link above). Asda Tinned Banana Blossom Review

Recently, I spotted a totally new vegetable/fruit (not sure which it actually is!) in Asda called Banana Blossom in a tin. It was next to the tins of Jackfruit which is a well known vegan meat alternative. I assumed it was a similar thing so happily bought some to try - it’s £1.50 a tin. The image on the wrapper looked innocent enough - battered fish pieces, only vegan! Surely this stuff must be good? Turns out that packaging was very misleading because nothing could prepare me for the horror that was lurking inside...when I opened the tin it was like opening something from a horror film, discovering the mouldy body of an ancient alien creature or other such evil. It looked hideous!! “Surely this is not meant for human consumption?!”, I thought. Heck it’s not even suitable for bird consumption....I think flies would even turn their nose up at this thing, which looked like rotten infested seaweed.
