Solero Mojito Ice Lollies with Rum (Adults Only!) Review

Amongst the Summer ice creams in Morrisons recently I spotted these new Mojito Solero's with Rum. I was excited to try them thanks to the promised rum flavour as it's not something you often see in an ice lolly. The box had "Adults Only" written on it which of course meant I had to show ID when buying them (nanny state that we're living in!), but at least I can take comfort in thinking I look younger than my age!

I couldn't wait to try the lollies as it was a hot day, and they looked enticingly refreshing on the box. I was imagining a cool, refreshing lime and rum combination. They're described as "Mojito flavour lemon lime water ice with rum and a mint flavour lemon lime core".

Unfortunately when I opened the wrapper I could tell they wouldn't be as nice as anticipated. They had a rather weak lime aroma and didn't look all that exciting.

Taking a bite, all I could really taste was a slightly tangy, watery lime flavour...with an aftertaste of mint. It was very pleasant and subtle, and if the lollies had been advertised as "Lime and Mint" I suppose I would've been fairly satisfied. But they were supposed to taste of rum, too - yet the rum flavour was completely absent! I asked my friend if he could taste any and he said he couldn't either.

The box lists rum as 0.2% in the ingredients list, which is low but I would've thought it enough to detect in the taste...but no - no rum flavour to be had here! The "mint, lemon & lime core" contained some sort of lime pulp, which wasn't the nicest texture although it did provide a bit of substance to chew on.

Overall these are pleasant enough mint and lime lollies, but don't go expecting to get tipsy on them!

  1. I had one of these today & actually really enjoyed it! It did tast fairly like a mojito perhaps without the kick! The white rum used does have a very subtle tast so may not be as esy to detect as you may think! x

  2. I've just tried this and it was a major let down! I wasn't expecting to be chewing on several pieces of compressed lime zest and where was the rum??!! mojito is one of my favourite cocktails but it doesn't work well as an ice lolly...4.5/10 because it is at least refreshing, but won't be buying it again

  3. Tried one of these and found it RUBBISH. The lime portion was all in one corner and tasted quite nice BUT the rest was quite tasteless like a very cheap lolly. I love Solero tropical and thought this would be similar. What a disappointment!

  4. The mint taste was reminiscent of mint sauce rather than fresh mint leaves

  5. I actually really like them...had one, and went back for another one! Lime bits are seem so wrong, but yet so right...was interesting and refreshing; I couldn't taste the rum at all though. Wouldn't buy these at full price, but worth 6 for £2.50 paid in the Morrisons offer.

  7. Just bought one of these for 13p (yes, really!!) from local store. Not expecting much but found it really refreshing and delicious. Loved the lime zest in the middle ... very unusual ... and tasted Mojito like to me. Clearly though it's an ice lolly from Walls, so anyone hoping to get a bit merry off it would be disappointed ;o)

  9. Total FAIL! They must have spent time and money researching and developing this most horrendous of ice-lollies. The BITS man! The BITS!? What are they all about!? I think they are taking the piss with this fucking wank. Will NEVER buy again EVER!

  10. Bought one earlier for 20p from Heron. Wasn't asked for ID, which I'm glad about, sick of being asked for ID when I'm 33 years old. Nice to look younger, but a pain in the ass.

I quite enjoyed it, but the adults only thing is pure fail, you'd need to eat a ton of these to get even slightly tipsy, what next, adults only for shandy?

  11. Had one of these yesterday for the first time in Calais. Absolutely loved it, best lolly ice I have ever tasted; especially the lime bits. Will be buying these now I'm back home in the UK.
