Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Wafer Bars! - Blast From The Past

Unfortunately today's post isn't a review as I can't review the iconic Banjo chocolate wafer bar...as it no longer exists! That's because Mars Foods shamefully and selfishly stopped production of this fantastic bar in the early 1980's, leaving its fans heartbroken and a generation deprived of its awesomeness!

Ok... I will admit I haven't actually tasted a Banjo bar, but I'm assured they were fantastic and far better than any other wafer bar on the market. Their unique selling point was their crispy wafers with a layer of chopped peanuts on top. There was also a toasted coconut version!:

It sounds like a unique combination and not something you would find on shelves today. The only similar bar I can think of is Kinder Bueno, which is a bit of a different proposition altogether. It's about time Mars brought a bar like this onto the market again since they rarely do anything other than Galaxy variations these days, or Mars bars without the nougat. Give us something we really want Mars!

So today's post is a call to my followers and fellow snacks fans - please sign the the Bring Back Banjo Petition to help bring back the one and only Banjo Bar and usher in a new era of snacking!

Also please Like the Bring Back Banjo page on Facebook and share with your friends!

  1. Hi thank you so much for writing the Bring Back Banjo post and mentioning the Banjo Petition and Campaign on Facebook. Maybe this will prove to Mars there is a demand for the return of Banjo bar!

    1. You're very welcome, let's hope Mars are listening! I don't think I can take another Snickers or Mars bar with extra nougat/nuts/caramel labelled as a "new" product. I know Banjo isn't "new" but it would certainly be different from what's out there now.

  3. I'm old enough to remember Banjo bars and can confirm that they were absolutely gorgeous. I'm not normally a fan of wafer bars or nuts but the two combined were just incredible. A taste never forgotten and much missed.

    1. We really do need a nutty wafer bar on shelves...apart from Bueno there's none! I reckon there's definitely a market for it.

  5. There is definitely a market for Banjo we need it back on our supermarket shelves. Ooooh that light & crisp wafer, nutty cream filling and chopped nuts covered in chocolate is making my mouth water already ;) and the advert cleverly mentions the ingredients in that Banjo jingle!

Didn't know this (until I read it a while back) that Banjo was available in Germany. and in Belgium there was a mint version. Found and linked on Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Bar FB Campaign - French Banjo commericals (some feature English actors!)

The UK also had a toasted coconut version in dark chocolate (sadly I never tried).

If your reading this Mars (Slough) please Bring Back Banjo Bar (even as a Limited Edition) I reckon it would be even more popular if it was re-issued . Agree with Scritti - a taste never forgotten and much missed.

A life without Banjo is incomplete :(

  6. Totally agree with all these comments, we need this fantastic chocolate bar back on our shelves, the nearest thing Ive ever found was when Ive been to Spain and they have a very similar product also made by Cadburys in Spain called "Tokke", I purchased a box of them late 2014 to bring back with me and they were gone in just a month as my daughter also took a craving to them!!

  8. OMG, as a child in the 80s, I remember this twin choccy bar well, and I ADORED IT!!!! I was never given pocket money per se, so just got one when I could, and I didn't even notice they had gone off the shelves until one day I just couldn't get one any more (I thought they would always be there).

I did email Mars a few years back (early 00s), and they said Banjo was/had nothng to do with them!!!!???? Really, as I thought it WAS them that at least distributed it? In their speak, they don't want anything to do with it, and god only knows why not?

They should at least give it another go. I am sure there are plenty of 'kids' these days who have never had anything like it who would go mad for it - and so it would do well. Why no one wants to bring it back is a mysstery. If I had the rights to it, I would defo bring it back.
