Orion Choco Boy - Mushroom-shaped Cookie Snacks Review!

The Chinese do love their crazy themed snacks. I've seen plenty of oddities in my local China Town, from "Wife Biscuits" (are they made of wife or for your wife?), to "Boy Bawang", "Ding Dong" (a catchphrase often used in the old Carry On films), and "Hot Kid Milk".

When I saw these similarly zany Choco Boy cookie/biscuit snacks, I couldn't resist reviewing them. The box design looks vaguely psychedelic, with the "boy" wearing a mushroom shaped hat...or is he meant to be a mushroom? I'm not sure, but it's trippy stuff indeed!

Opening the box revealed a packet of crunchy cookie sticks with milk chocolate tops - the cookie is supposed to be the "stalk" part of the mushroom and the chocolate is supposed to be the...er...head bit. They looked really cool and very unique - I've never seen a snack quite like these before.


They tasted very moreish - the cookie had a pleasantly sweet, vanilla-hinted flavour, whilst the milk chocolate was just standard milk chocolate - nothing amazing, but certainly not bad either. As a snack the combination worked really well and I found them very addictive - it was easy to get through most of the pack without realizing it. I did feel a bit weird munching on what amounts to chocolate biscuit mushrooms though!


Overall, I think Choco Boy are an interesting and unique snack, the like of which we'd never see from any UK manufacturer. If you happen to see these and fancy something a bit "different" for your snacking purposes, you can't go wrong giving them a try. Just don't blame me if people give you funny looks for eating them in public!

Note: These are actually made in Russia but imported to China and other countries, so they must be quite popular!

Asda Tinned Banana Blossom Review

Recently, I spotted a totally new vegetable/fruit (not sure which it actually is!) in Asda called Banana Blossom in a tin. It was next to the tins of Jackfruit which is a well known vegan meat alternative. I assumed it was a similar thing so happily bought some to try - it’s £1.50 a tin. The image on the wrapper looked innocent enough - battered fish pieces, only vegan! Surely this stuff must be good? Turns out that packaging was very misleading because nothing could prepare me for the horror that was lurking inside...when I opened the tin it was like opening something from a horror film, discovering the mouldy body of an ancient alien creature or other such evil. It looked hideous!! “Surely this is not meant for human consumption?!”, I thought. Heck it’s not even suitable for bird consumption....I think flies would even turn their nose up at this thing, which looked like rotten infested seaweed. Lidl Way To Go Fin Carre Ethical Chocolate

I recently spotted some new funky looking bars in Lidl, and instantly they reminded me of Tony’s Chocolonely bars, the ethical brand that launched last year donating money to helping end slavery in cocoa production. I’ve always loved the Tony’s brand and I think in 2020, more than ever, we need more ethically produced products - it should be expected, let’s be honest! So it’s always nice to see another brand like this even if it’s essentially copying Tony’s. I got the dark chocolate version to try as I was curious how it would be compared to other dark chocolates. In hindsight this was a mistake, as the actual chocolate is nothing extraordinary. It’s nice enough and good quality don’t get me wrong but it has no particular distinct flavour to make me buy it again. I’ll certainly try the other two flavours which are Milk Chocolate and Almond and Sea Salt, and I do like the chunky haphazard block design that mimics Tony’s Chocolonely.
